Amato Vino are small-batch artisan winemakers with a winemaking philosophy termed ‘lo-fi’, embracing wild-ferments, minimal adjustments in the winery, gentle handling and employing traditional processes. Wines are typically unfined and unfiltered. An old-school approach yet with a modern flare for creativity and adventure. Amato wines are made from some eclectic and unusual grape varieties and winemaking methods as well as with traditional Margaret River varietals. The tasting bar is just down the road at the iconic "Darnell's Trader" in Witchy, now called "The Witch and Windmill"... hoping to see you soon.
Established in 2003 by owner/winemaker Brad Wehr, the labels and wine styles continue to grow, covering traditional Margaret River varietals through to some eclectic and unusual grape varieties and winemaking methods.  At Amato Vino, they are hands-on in terms of the grunt work, the care and guidance, but with a hands-off approach to the science of winemaking, using little or no inputs and employing traditional processes.

The Wines:

AMATO VINO ‘wilds’
The ‘wilds’ are home to emerging Mediterranean varieties, micro-batches, skinsy ferments and other eclectic wines. Featuring single vineyards, hand-picks, natural ferments – and incorporating minimal winemaking input and unconventional vessels for fermentation/maturation – this is the wild stuff. Packaged under labels bearing in-house artworks/designs/photography the ‘wilds’ include Teroldego, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Primitivo, Marsanne, Trousseau, and Savagnin.

AMATO VINO ‘mantra’
The ‘mantra’ series is all about the classic Margies grape varieties, albeit with the Amato Vino lo-fi twist. The emphasis is on vineyard site & fruit purity, working with small fruit parcels to bring out the best from each site. Wild ferments (open and barrel), no adds, no fining and filtration are all central to the mix. Wines include a Barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

AMATO VINO ‘fusa’
‘Fusa’… the home for Amato blends (foo-za). Utilising emerging/alternative varieties as the basis for the blend,  seeking to create juicy, fresh drinkability, yet complex and alluring wines – packed with flavour but oh-so light on their feet. The Bianco and Rosso are fruit-forward, fleshy and flavoursome versions of some of their favourite grape varieties and are made for short to mid-term drinking.

Tasting Options:

Each week there are 5 Amato Vino wines on the tasting menu at the Witchcliffe cellar door, and this selection changes weekly. There are 2 tasting options on offer. The first is the more traditional "Flavour Flight" - an informative snapshot of all 5 wines on tasting (20ml taste of each). This is $10 per person, and redeemable on any bottle purchase. The second option is the "Savour Flight" - your choice of 3 of the 5 wines of the week (50ml sample of each), served all together on a specially designed stave paddle for you to enjoy at your own pace, with tasting notes provided for those who want to read along. This is $15 per person, with a 10% discount on any bottles purchased following the flight.

Enjoy a cheese plate whilst you sip on your vino! A choice of Cambray cheeses from Nannup, organic Olio Bello olives, Paddock 2 Produce relish and Krissini grissini breadsticks - all delicious produce from Margaret River and surrounds. A perfect snack or lunch between two!

Great little winery door in Witchcliffe. Really nice to see different grape varieties (especially the Italians) in Margaret River other than the standard Chardonnay and Cab Sauv. Really compelling takes on some mainstream wines as well, Brad is an inventive gent. Interested, interesting and funny staff (James might get a marriage proposal from the East coast shortly). I really suggest a visit here rather than the same old big names constantly touted on web search results.

What an amazing place and wines! Each one of the 5 tastings was a superb drop, clean and flavoursome. Appreciated Sharon’s knowledge and passion for wines. Bought 5 bottles.

Grazie Chelsea and Amato Vino team for supporting local family businesses. Love from Elisa and Kris 🥰

Beautiful location, at least 3 separate shops in the one spot. Very eclectic decor, organically developed and fabulously executed. Shops sell art, books, herbs and paraphernalia. Wine tasting is delicious also. Well worth a visit.
