The Margaret River Region’s weather reflects the mild Mediterranean climate, that not only makes for a premium wine growing region but also a year round choice for holiday makers.

The first inhabitants of the Margaret River Region, the Wadandi people, follow a six season calendar, still used by Aboriginal people today. Each of the seasons are marked by changes in the natural world, which signal how to live in harmony with the land.

Summer: December - February

Summer in the Margaret River Region has little rainfall, and the average maximum temperature is just under 30 degrees Celsius. Hot days are usually cooled off with lovely afternoon sea breezes. Summer evenings are balmy to mild with temperatures around 15.5 degrees Celsius.

February is when vintage takes place, with teams of workers expertly picking the carefully nurtured grapes. The lush verdant vines are a stunning backdrop to your wine tasting or picnic.

Autumn: March - May

Autumn sees cooler mornings and evenings with warm days and glassy sunsets across the coastline. It’s also regularly noted as a favourite season in the region, as there’s enough sunshine to enjoy the great outdoors, while still being cool enough to park up next to the fireplace in the evenings, accompanied by a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and cosy woollen socks.

This is a great time for surfing, so it’s no coincidence that April / May is when the Margaret River Pro takes over town, with the best surfers from around the world arriving to compete at Main Break, in Prevally.

It’s also when the summer crowds have dispersed, and there’s plenty of time to explore at a more leisurely pace.

Winter: June – August

Most of the rainfall for the Margaret River Region occurs in the winter, but there are still plenty of glorious sunny days. Winter enjoys mild temperatures that average 16 to 18 degrees with some days in the early 20’s. Winter evenings are mild and average above 8 degrees Celsius but are still cool enough to enjoy a log fire.

Rather than fighting the cold, the Margaret River Region celebrates it. Some might say it’s when the region shows off its true colours. Get out on the Cape to Cape track, jump on a mountain bike and hit the trails, or book a whale watching tour to get up close to these incredible mammals.

The exhilaration of a day exploring in the crisp fresh air is unmatched, and makes getting into your warm bed at the end of the day even more luxurious.

Whether you love music, cinema, getting physical, wine, food or all of the above, there’s a crowd-pleasing event for everyone in winter.

Spring: September – November

Spring is lovely and warm with plenty of sunny days. Wildflowers put on a dazzling show, with many species only seen in this part of the world. From rare orchids bursting through the forest floor to vivid displays of wildflowers on the coast, there are plenty of different ways to enjoy them at this time of year.

The region also plays host to a number of iconic events, including the joyful Fine Vines Festival which celebrates all things wine and the gourmet treats that go with it.
