Yallingup Aboriginal Art Gallery, a window to Dreamtime

Yallingup Aboriginal Art Gallery, currently the largest dedicated Indigenous fine art gallery in the Margaret River Region, proudly features artists such as award-winning Abbie Loy Kemarre from Utopia in Alice Springs and local Noongar custodian artist Josh Whiteland.

This world-class gallery is a labour of love curated by locals Sara and Tim Greay, who own and operate the award-winning luxury accommodation space Bina Maya Yallingup Escape. The gallery is not just a place to view art but a destination in itself. Located at the entrance to Yallingup Maze on Caves Road, it offers a unique blend of art and storytelling.

Before November 2023, a smaller version of the gallery formed part of Bina Maya. It is now situated in a newly renovated space vast enough to encompass artists from all over Australia. The couple, who have been collecting art for many years, are thrilled to unveil Yallingup Aboriginal Art Gallery.

Right next door to the gallery is the winery Jilyara’s cellar door, which creates wines following the Noongar Six Seasons. After visiting the gallery, it is the perfect spot to enjoy a wine tasting.

The gallery features work from artists as far afield as Cape York in Queensland, Central Australia, the vast Western Desert region, the remote APY Lands of South Australia, and all over the vast state of  Western Australia, offering diverse styles and stories.

Acquiring a piece from Yallingup Aboriginal Art Gallery is as much about the artist’s story as it is about the work itself. When you find a piece that speaks to you, Sara, Tim and their friendly gallery team will guide you through the purchase process. Acquiring a piece of Aboriginal art is a privilege: “It’s like the artist is entrusting you with a piece of their life and culture”.

Each artwork comes with a certificate of provenance, guaranteeing its authenticity and supporting the artist’s legacy.

With their gallery in the heart of Wadandi country, Sara and Tim proudly feature emerging and award-winning local artists from the Noongar culture. The gallery serves as a platform for discourse on the six Noongar seasons of Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang, enlightening visitors about the unique traditional way of representing sustainability and environmental cohesiveness.

Local Noongar artworks include paintings, limited-edition prints, ceramics, books, earrings, locally-made sustainable towels, clapping sticks, and didgeridoos.

For the discerning art collector, Yallingup Aboriginal Art Gallery is one of the premier destination galleries in Australia, with a diverse range of artworks.

Sara and Tim collect artworks through galleries, art houses, and fairs or directly from artists from remote communities. There are future plans for travel to meet more artists in person.

They aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture and provide a platform for Indigenous artists to share their stories and talents with Margaret River Region’s visitors.

With abundant space Sara and Tim have plans to work with and exhibit local Noongar artists, such as Kim Kiosses and Yondee Shane Hansen. All with the care of their small family business environment.

The gallery is open six days a week: 10-4pm Monday through Friday, 11-4pm Saturday, and Sunday by appointment. It is wheelchair accessible and welcomes visitors of all abilities to experience the beauty and diversity of Indigenous art.
