One of the world’s youngest wine regions, Western Australia’s Margaret River Region is something of a prodigy, achieving success, prestige and international acclaim at an early age particularly for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. But the soils in which its vines thrive are some of the most ancient on Earth.
Surrounded by ocean on three sides, the pristine and geographically isolated environment ensures that every wine is special but not one is the same. Sustainability and innovation is a core focus for many of the region’s wineries specialising in organic, biodynamic and natural winemaking with Cullen Wines at the forefront as the first winery in Australia to be certified 100% carbon neutral.
A journey through Margaret River’s 90+ cellar doors (over 65 of which are rated Halliday 5 star wineries) is sophisticated yet relaxed, authentic and unique. Meandering from cellar door to cellar door is easy and spectacular with vistas of farmland, wine country and the coast. The diversity ranges from farm-style to architecturally elaborate, many of which have casual cafés ranging to world-class restaurants.
Take a quick look at the regional map and you’ll see that the cellar doors are easy to find and close together. Follow one of our wine trails, book a behind the scenes wine experience or totally immerse yourself amongst the vines with a night or two at some of the winery accommodation on offer. All of this is easy to get to as it is only 3 hours’ drive south of Perth.
