John Streater is a distinguished master craftsman and designer renowned for his bespoke hardwood furniture. Nestled in the heart of Yallingup, John's workshop and gallery invites visitors to get a unique glimpse into the artistry of the Margaret River Region. A viewing area into the workshop gives you an understanding of what is required to create such beautiful pieces; here you can watch the master at work.
The gallery stands as a testament to John’s craftsmanship and passion. Built by John himself in the 1980s, its walls are crafted from solid Jarrah and southwest limestone, forming a captivating backdrop that beautifully showcases his work. But the gallery isn't just a shrine to John's talent; it's a dynamic space that hosts a diverse array of artists and creators, from woodturning and glasswork to children's puzzles, jewellery, pottery, and more.
John's journey as a master craftsman began in 1982 in Yallingup, where he honed his skills working with a local furniture maker. In 1988, he realised his dream by establishing his own workshop and gallery on Blythe Rd in Yallingup, where he continues to work and reside today.
Over the past four decades, John's reputation has grown, thanks to iconic creations like the Cone Table and the Parallel Universe table, which have solidified his status as one of Australia's finest furniture makers.
As the dynamics of the Margaret River Region evolved, so did John's vision for his gallery. In February 2009, after a thoughtful renovation, the gallery re-emerged as a space where John's work harmoniously coexists with the pieces of other esteemed locals like glassblower Alan Fox and artists like Julia Carter, Elani, Dylan Fox (photography).
This collaborative space weaves together beautiful objects to help visitors envision how these pieces can enrich their own living spaces. The gallery's reopening also coincided with John securing the distributorship for Cattlean Italia in Western Australia, a family-owned company known for crafting superior quality Italian furniture.
Behind John's remarkable journey is his steadfast partner, Pamela, whose unwavering support has allowed him to pursue his passion for design and furniture making. As the curator of the gallery, she plays an essential role in bringing the space to life. Together, John and Pamela create an environment where art, craftsmanship, and innovation come together to inspire all who walk through the gallery's doors.
